Andrew Scott is Tom Ripley in the first trailer for Netflix’s coming psychological thriller series “Ripley,” which debuted its first teaser Monday morning. The Patricia Highsmith adaptation was originally set up at Showtime, but was acquired by Netflix in a sale between the companies.
Directed and written by Steven Zaillian, who most recently penned Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” the series follows Scott’s Ripley, described as “a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York.” The plot follows his relationship with a wealthy man traveling in Italy with a troubled relationship with his son. Deceit follows, in typical Ripley fashion.
Along with Scott, who is also a producer on the show, Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning will star. Flynn plays Dickie Greenleaf, the “vagabond son” who becomes subject to Tom’s scheming, while Fanning plays Marge Sherwood, Dickie’s girlfriend who grows suspicious of Tom.
“You’re a very hard man to find. No address. Phone. Office,” Tom is told in the teaser.
This isn’t the first iteration of Highsmith’s Tom Ripley character, with Matt Damon playing the role in the 1999 film “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” Based on Highsmith’s novel of the same name, “The Talented Mr. Ripley” followed Tom setting off to bring Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) home. Gwyneth Paltrow co-starred as Marge. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards.
“Ripley” is co-produced by Showtime and Endemol Shine North America with Entertainment 360 and Filmrights. Serving as executive producers are Zaillian, Garrett Basch, Clayton Townsend, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy and Philipp Keel of Diogenes.
The teaser reveals in April 4 premiere date for the series, debuting all eight episodes on Netflix at once.
