Greta Gerwig

The director, writer and actress Greta Gerwig was born in Sacramento, California in 1983. Gerwig, a Barnard College graduate, got her first big break in the mumblecore film movement after she was cast in the 2006 Joe Swanberg film "LOL." Shortly after her debut, she was booked for another 2006 feature Mark and Jay Duplass' film "Baghead." Her presence on (and off) screen electrified the collection of late aught films starring directionless millennials suffering from a debilitating sense of general ennui.

In 2007, Swanberg and Gerwig would team up to write "Hannah Takes the Stairs" and would eventually co-direct and co-write the 2008 feature flick "Nights and Weekends."

Gerwig's big breakout role was starring in the 2012 black-and-white film "Frances Ha." Co-written with director Noah Baumbach the film premiered with substantial critical acclaim at the Telluride Film Festival. Variety critic Peter Debruge, one of the many journalists who praised the film wrote, "'Frances Ha' isn’t a plot picture, but a portrait, after all. Where other performers act, Gerwig manages to just be, making her precisely the right young star to carry such a genial glimpse at a character who doesn’t even seem to realize she’s trying to find herself."

Gerwig previously worked with Baumbach on the 2010 film "Greenberg" starring Ben Stiller and would collaborate with him again on the 2015 movie "Mistress America," the 2022 Netflix feature "White Noise" and the 2023 blockbuster "Barbie."

In 2013, Gerwig almost landed on the sitcom circuit after CBS and 20th Century Fox Television announced their "How I Met Your Mother" spinoff series titled "How I Met Your Dad." The show was centered around Gerwig (playing the new character Sally) telling her story of growing up in New York City and meeting the future father of her children. Meg Ryan was allegedly going to voice future Sally. However, CBS passed on picking up after the pilot episode.

Gerwig's first big directorial smash was with the beloved 2017 indie film "Lady Bird." Starring Saoirse Ronan, the coming-of-age film revealed the roller coaster reality of merely existing as a high school senior. Told through the POV of Christine McPherson (Ronan) who nicknamed herself Lady Bird, Gerwig revealed in her Variety cover story that the picture was only semi-autobiographical. The cornerstone of "Lady Bird's" narrative is the delicate balance between mother (played by Laurie Metcalf) and daughter. The roles would earn both Metcalf and Ronan Academy Award nominations for acting and Gerwig would be nominated for best picture, Director and original screenplay.

Ronan and Gerwig would reunite for the 2019 adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic novel "Little Women." The powerhouse cast included Florence Pugh, Timothée Chalamet, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Emma Watson and Meryl Streep. Gerwig carved out her own unique narrative adapting the book by crafting a screenplay that jumped through time with the March family which would land the director both box office success and wildly positive reviews. "Little Women" received six Academy Award nominations including best picture, Ronan for actor, Pugh for supporting actor, adapted screenplay, original score and won the Oscar for costume design.

The next feature Gerwig would direct was the 2023 international phenomenon, "Barbie." Set in a magical reality where Barbie is very real (and always looks fabulous) this stunning pink exposition about the patriarchy would eventually make over a billion dollars at the box office. Starring (and executive produced) by Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken) this wildly adored film landed an 88% on rotten tomatoes and an A cinemascore. The Warner Bros. picture also brought academy nominations for best picture, supporting actor for America Ferrera, supporting actor for Gosling, costume design, production design, two original song nominations for "I'm Just Ken" and "What Was I Made For?" and adapted screenplay.
